Weekly Plans - Week 22 (Feb. 12-16)

This is going to be (yet another!) busy week ahead! We have our Book Fair, Shrove/Pancake Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day all within a few days of each other!

Here's a look at our centres this week:

Our poem is super fun this week - with a focus on pancakes!
After learning it, students will partner up and get 1 bean bag (or "pancake"). As we chant the poem and say the words "toss a pancake", one partner will throw the "pancake" to their partner who will try and catch it! Then they switch! It's a lot of fun!
This squishy pancake was gifted to me by Ms. B. a few years ago and I always use it with the DECE I work with to show students an example of how to play.

We are getting ready for Lent in our classroom. We will start on Tuesday by discussing what Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Tuesday) is. On Wednesday, before we head to the Ash Wednesday liturgy, we will learn why we receive ashes on our heads and also start our Lenten chain.
Each day we will tear off a strip from the chain and read the activity.
Each week we will be focusing on lessons and activities from my Lent & Holy Week pack if you wish to follow along!

Students can use the spatula to flip over a pancake, read the sight word and record it on the worksheet!
This activity can be found in my Flip a Pancake game.

We learned about Lunar New Year last week. So we decided to leave out some materials for students to create their own dragon (as it's also the year of the dragon!).

Can you write a Chinese zodiac animal word on the Buddha board?

With Valentine's Day also this week, one student donated this fun Bingo game so we set it up for students to play together!

We are wrapping up our Arctic Inquiry.
Students have been researching an animal and drawing it for our class mural in the hallway.
We also learned about northern Canada (which is part of the Arctic circle!) and all of the things the Inuit invented (and how to say the words in that language)!

At our Game Centre this week, we left out this large felt heart tic-tac-toe. I found it a few weeks ago from Dollarama.

Students can make their own Valentine's Day cards or books!
We added this word poster from my Writing Center Posters pack.

We turned our Small World Play Centre into Valentine World!

I added a few Valentine's Day loose parts, along with these colourful stir sticks, to the light table.
Can you design a picture?

We had a lot of fun learning about fair shares and introducing students to the word "remainder" last week. At our Math Centre I added these fair share cards to solve!

At our Pocket Chart Centre, students can build simple CVC words with the letters/sounds we have introduced so far.

This week (and next week) our focus in math is spatial relationships.
I think this is one of my favourite units to teach!!! There are so many hands-on activities included in this pack!
We will start the week by learning about tangrams - always a favourite puzzle to solve!
We read the story Grandfather Tang's Story to learn about how tangrams can turn into different animals!
I like offering students the opportunity to create their own animal using the tangrams also!

We will also be focusing on positional words.

You can find all of the above, along with 2-weeks of detailed lesson plans (and hands-on, follow-up activities/centres) in my Spatial Relationships in Kindergarten pack.
